River Highlands Ranch Wedding: A Romantic Winter Celebration

Intro
On February 20th, Joseph and Basia’s River Highlands Ranch Wedding in Smartsville California day began unlike any other—with a rare and unexpected
snowstorm sweeping through Nevada County.
While nearby areas like Grass Valley and Nevada City were covered in snow, their wedding venue at River Highlands Ranch sat in a quiet calm, with temperatures hovering in the low 40s and the snow already beginning to melt. What could have felt stressful instead became part of the story—something unique, memorable, and beautifully handled.
With a quick and intentional pivot, the ceremony was moved indoors. The barn doors remained open as guests arrived, allowing soft natural light to pour into the space, creating a romantic and airy atmosphere before being gently closed to transition into the evening’s celebration.
From the very beginning, the day carried a feeling of warmth, love, and quiet excitement. Joseph and Basia’s connection was emotional, sweet, and playful—felt not only between them, but by every guest in the room.
A Ceremony Framed by Nature
The ceremony was originally planned outdoors, but with the unpredictable weather, we made a thoughtful pivot to host it inside the barn—with both of the venue ranch large barn doors open.
This created the most beautiful balance of indoor comfort and outdoor connection. Natural light poured in, and the surrounding landscape still felt like part of the experience. It was intimate, calm, and incredibly romantic.
The ceremony included meaningful personal touches, including a beautiful cross arbor and the couple’s dog, who made a sweet and memorable appearance.
Design & Atmosphere
The design for this wedding day was a beautiful blend of romantic elegance with meaningful Hawaiian influence, creating a space that felt both elevated and deeply personal.
The bride’s vision came to life through a thoughtful collaboration with the groom’s sister, who led the floral design. I worked closely alongside her to ensure every detail was executed exactly as envisioned. With the support of my team, we set the space with intention and precision, bringing each element together seamlessly.
The floral design layered soft romantic blooms with subtle tropical elements. White roses, orchids, and peace lilies were paired with lush greenery including monstera leaves and palms, creating a refined look with a meaningful nod to the bride’s Hawaiian roots.
Monstera leaf runners flowed naturally along the farm tables, accented by floating candles and soft candlelight that created a warm, inviting glow. Delicate white rose petals added softness and movement, while black accents—seen in the favor boxes and linens—grounded the design with a modern, elevated contrast.
Her bouquet featured a soft cascading style with white orchids, roses, and palm accents that gently flowed downward. The result was elegant and organic—romantic, refined, and deeply personal.
Lighting played a key role in transforming the space throughout the evening. The ceremony began with natural light pouring in through the open barn doors, enhanced by the venue’s chandeliers. As the evening progressed, the space transitioned into a warm, intimate glow, with candlelight and chandeliers creating a romantic dinner atmosphere.
Following the ceremony, guests were invited to the front of the barn for cocktail hour, allowing the celebration to continue seamlessly while my team and I transitioned the space behind the scenes. This flow kept guests fully immersed in the experience without interruption.
Each place setting included a thoughtfully prepared favor—a single s’mores kit tucked inside a sleek black box—tying into the cozy outdoor bonfire experience later in the evening.
A Personal Connection
This wedding held a special place in my heart. Being born and raised in Hawaii, I immediately connected with Basia and her family through our shared roots.
There was something so familiar and comforting in the energy of the day—the warmth, the traditions, and even the sound of the accents I grew up with. It brought a sense of home into the celebration that made the experience even more meaningful for me.
As a small personal gesture, I gifted them a Hawaiian Santa along with cuttings from my ti leaf plant—something symbolic and close to my heart. I also created custom “Mr. & Mrs. Rykert” dinner napkins for their sweetheart table, along with silk gardenia hair clips as a thoughtful detail just for them.
It was such a joy to not only support their day, but to feel genuinely connected to it in a way that made it even more special.
Planning and coordinating a day like this is exactly what I love to do through my wedding planning and coordination services.
Seamless Indoor Flip & Thoughtful Execution
With the ceremony moved indoors, every adjustment was made with intention to maintain both beauty and functionality. As the evening unfolded, we closed the barn doors and transitioned seamlessly into cocktail hour and reception, allowing the space to shift into a warm, intimate glow.
To ensure a smooth and efficient room flip, we made a thoughtful decision to keep the ceremony aisle clean rather than using rose petals as originally planned. This allowed for a faster, more seamless transition into dinner service.
To stay ahead of the flip, I preset all reception tables in advance, including décor and place settings. Once the ceremony concluded, my team and I carefully transitioned the space—sliding the fully styled farm tables into place and setting chairs for dinner.
This approach preserved the full design while creating a seamless guest experience, with little interruption between ceremony and reception.
Reception Flow & Special Moments
Once guests were seated and taking in the newly revealed space, the evening continued with a seamless transition into the reception.
The bride and groom made their grand entrance and moved directly into their first dance, sharing the moment in front of their sweetheart table surrounded by candlelight and the warm glow of the room.
Following the dance, they took their seats as the groom welcomed guests with a heartfelt speech—setting the tone for the evening ahead.
Then, in a moment that was both personal and unforgettable, the bride surprised the groom with a beautiful hula dance, honoring her Hawaiian roots and adding a deeply meaningful layer to the celebration.
Joseph and Basia’s River Highlands Ranch Wedding was a beautiful reminder that even the unexpected can become part of something truly special. From the thoughtful design and meaningful personal touches to the seamless transitions throughout the day, every moment felt intentional and deeply connected.
If you’re planning a wedding at River Highlands Ranch or anywhere in Nevada County, having someone by your side who can guide the flow, adapt when needed, and bring your vision together makes all the
difference.
